On July 16th, Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City had the pleasure of welcoming back President Ma Ying-Jeou of Republic of China (Taiwan). President Ma had journeyed to Republic of China’s diplomatic allies, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua. On his return trip home to Taiwan, the President stopped over in Los Angeles for one night and once again chose Hilton Universal City for his stay. It was President Ma’s 4th time staying at our hotel.
Over 400 supporters gathered outside the hotel to get a glimpse and a handshake from the President. The excited group of supporters cheered and took pictures as President Ma arrived at the hotel and stepped onto the red carpet. President Ma was welcomed back to Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City by Chairman Denn Hu, General Manager Mark Davis, and over 50 proud members of our team. The President graciously took the time to personally greet and shake hands with many of our team members as he made his way through the lobby.
In the evening 400 loyal Los Angeles residents attended a special dinner hosted by the President in our Sierra Ballroom. The guests enjoyed a specially prepared five course meal created by Executive Chef George Sit, assisted by our Mandarin Chef, Barry Chan. All the dinner guests had the opportunity to take a picture with President Ma, and at the conclusion of the event everyone joined the President in singing a Taiwanese Song. It was truly a magical and unforgettable evening for all!
When President Ma departed the next day, after a morning jog with Chairman Hu, our Hilton team and 200 Taiwanese guests gathered to wish him farewell. As he left through the main entrance of the hotel everyone waved Taiwan & US flags and chanted his name. Thank you, President Ma, for choosing Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City as your home away from home.

To raise awareness and funds for the Esophageal Cancer, on Saturday, May 2, 2015 more than 40 brave men and woman rappelled down the 24 stories of our hotel, almost a 300 foot drop. We were honored to be a part of this event that was spearheaded by Esophageal Cancer Action Network, in partnership with Over the Edge USA.
A welcome evening reception kicked things off on Friday night. Attendees were treated to a buffet dinner created especially by our Executive Chef, George Sit. The music played and the cocktails flowed as those who gathered remembered loved ones they have lost or that are struggling with this type of cancer. They shared stories, laughed and reminisced on the reasons that had lead up to this challenge.
Saturday’s sun shone clear and bright as the harnesses were secured to the rigging on the top of our 24 story glistening mirrored building. On lookers gathered in our pool area, under the shade of our palm trees, as they watched each person descend down our tower. Supportive cheers filled the air as each person safely reached the ground. There was something for everyone, including a rock climbing wall for the little ones, background tunes provided by a DJ and food trucks to feed the hungry crowd.
This was definitely an amazing day and an event we all will not soon forget. It isn’t too late to support ECAN. Donations for those who did the descent are being accepted until June 2, 2015 – simply go to http://www.storiestosavelives.org/donate/ to place your support.
The stage was set, every glass sparkled, and the red carpet rolled out as our Sierra Ballroom had the distinguished honor to welcome the who’s who in Daytime television at the 42nd Daytime Creative Arts Emmy® Awards hosted by Florence Henderson and Alex Trebek. As each nominee took their place on the Red Carpet, they were welcomed with interviews and photographers trying to snap the perfect shot. Once they reached the end, they were escorted into our Sierra Ballroom where an evening of reception and awards awaited.
In addition to the evening’s famous hosts, an illustrious group of presenters for the evenings awards included Darin Brooks and Lawrence Saint-Victor of “The Bold & the Beautiful” (CBS), Laura Wright and Chad Duell of “General Hospital” (ABC), Hunter King and Lachlan Buchanan of “The Young & the Restless” (CBS), Casey Moss and Jen Lilley of “Days of Our Lives” (NBC), Judge Marilyn Milian of “The People’s Court” (Syndicated), John Tesh of “Intelligence for Your Life” (Syndicated) along with many others all gathering to honor those that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make our favorite daytime line-up happen each day.
The attendees reception started with white glove butler passed appetizers which included; Beef Carpaccio Canapes, Balsamic Stuffed Mushroom Caps, Miniature Fried Wanton Cups and Ahi Poke. Once the awards began, attendees dined on a three course dinner created by our Executive Chef, George Sit. The champagne flowed as the awards were given to each lucky recipient.
Lifetime Achievement for Craft was the final evening’s award going to Producer/Director Michael Gargiulo. Mr. Gargiulo is known for producing iconic shows like “Password,” “Match Game,” “I’ve Got a Secret,” “To Tell the Truth,” “The Price is Right,” and directing “Jackpot” on NBC, and later, the “$10,000 Pyramid.” It was a great evening for Daytime television and a shining event for Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City Hotel.
