Hollywood Really is Forever!

For 11 years now, growing numbers of L.A. residents have been lining up around the block to get into Hollywood Forever Cemetery every spring and summer. They aren’t waiting to pay their respects, or visit a famous grave, but to see a classic movie under the moonlight – sometimes just a few feet from where the stars of the film are buried. This season is the 11-year anniversary of Cinespia, the group that organizes the cemetery screenings.

Cinespia is wrapping up their movie series this Labor Day with Dirty Dancing and Scarface. So come watch these iconic movies but don’t forget to bring blankets, drinks and picnic dinner for this screening below the stars. Also as a courtesy to other moviegoers: no tall chairs and no distilled spirits are permitted.

It’s Never Too Soon To Start Panicking…HHN 2012

Your end draws near as the night grows darker. On select nights September 21 – October 31, face horror’s most terrifying creatures in the flesh at Universal Studios Hollywood. Explore the depths of all-new haunted houses, spine-tingling scare zones, live shows and more. Halloween Horror Nights, featuring AMC’s The Walking Dead, Silent Hill, and Alice Cooper to name a few.

The Walking Dead: Dead Inside and Terror Tram: Invaded by The Walking Dead

AMC’s popular television show gets the HHN haunted house treatment as visitors are cast in the roles of the living trying to escape undead zombies. But wait there’s more (apocalyptic zombie gore)! If guests somehow outrun the flesh-eating creatures in the maze, they’ll also have the chance to contend with the hungry hordes who have infiltrated Universal Studios’ renowned back-lot. Instead of the tight quarters of a haunted house, the Terror Tram will give intrepid visitors the opportunity to see — and become part of the action with — zombies in a cityscape much like the ones depicted on the show. If you think you’ll be able to shy away from the marauding mobs from the safety of the tour tram, think again. Guests will be booted off of the bus to walk among the restless zombies and fend for themselves on the dangerous streets. Good luck!

Welcome Silent Hill

Based on the video games and horror films (a sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D will debut just before Halloween) this haunted house will pit guests against knife-bearing wackos, hideously gnarled nurses, and other lovely characters from the series. Despite the name, I’m expecting plenty of piercing shrieks emanating from Silent Hill.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Saw is the Law

Nearly every Halloween haunt has at least one crazed lunatic running around in attack mode with a revved-up chainsaw. The inspiration for all of this lunacy comes from 1974 horror classic, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Instead of referencing the classic, Universal will go straight to the source and retell the lovely tale of Leatherface and and his cadre of cannibals. Visitors to the maze won’t be passively watching the film however; they will become potential victims of the hungry, saw-wielding nut jobs. Sounds like fun!

Alice Cooper – Goes to Hell

012 will be the second year that the classic rocker, who has built a distinctive career out of merging horror with hard rock, will be featured at HHN. His Welcome to My Nightmare maze, which debuted last year in Hollywood, will be crossing the country to give Florida HHN visitors bad dreams this year. An all new 3-D haunted house, Goes to Hell (whose title seems redundant; we all know Alice’s fate), will take its place. Expect plenty of loud music and mascara-streaked characters freaking everybody out.

La Llorona: La Cazadora de Ninos

This is a returning theme from a maze that debuted last year, although the house itself will be updated. It will take its cue from the Latin American legend of the Weeping Woman (or La Llorona), a tragic figure who kills her own children (ninos en Espanol), takes her own life in remorse, and wanders the earth in spirit form weeping for her lost offspring. Sounds like creepy fun in any language.

It’s never to soon to panic. So mark your calendars for this terrifying event. More updates to come along with special hotel rates to make this experience last even longer…

Catering for Jewish Events

Many events or gatherings, especially large scale ones, benefit from the use of a food caterer to take care of both food and beverage needs. For those events with guests that keep kosher in attendance, a different type of caterer may be needed. A kosher caterer is a person or company that specializes in preparing and serving food and beverages that adhere to kashrut — the strict set of Jewish dietary laws.

A caterer in general can cover the needs for virtually any sized event, from a family holiday gathering to a massive ballroom affair. These services are great options to take the pressure of many details off of a host. This is perhaps all the more true when special cooking needs are in order. While many caterers offer niche services such as ethnic cooking or vegetarian preparation, being a kosher caterer generally takes an extra level of expertise and certification.

Events that typically call for kosher catering include Jewish weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, and bris ceremonies. Holiday dinners, such as those on Rosh Hashanah or Passover, are also often catered. Allow us to highlight some delicious ideas for your event.

Honey Roasted Pomegranate Chicken

This chicken dish, using pomegranates, honey, carrots, and apricots, is perfect for the Jewish Holiday Rosh Hashanah as it combines traditional New Year ingredients into a beautiful dish, served with hope for a sweet and fruitful New Year.

Makki Ka Soweta

It is all about the rich and authentic Indian flavor and taste. The easy Makki ka Soweta is lamb cooked with corn and spices. Cook up a feast for your guests with this simple lamb curry recipe.

Braiding a Six Strand Challah

Challah is a wonderful tasty bread. The challah bread is a very soft egg bread and is very pleasing in both appearance and taste. n The 6 braided Challah is very special

Matzo Ball Soup

This classic Passover recipe is served as the first course of the seder meal in Jewish homes all around the world.

Knishes

This recipe for classic Jewish baked dumplings is a baked or fried dumpling made of flaky dough with your choice of filling. In the most traditional versions, the filling is made entirely of mashed potato, ground meat, sauerkraut, onions, kasha (buckwheat groats) or cheese. Other varieties of fillings feature sweet potatoes, black beans, fruit, broccoli, tofu or spinach.

Those these are just highlights of countless Jewish traditional and memorial dishes we hope they inspire you when planning your next event.

Plan Your Event

Our catering department would be honored to help you with all your catering and event needs for your life’s most important events. They can assist you in choosing the best menu and services to make your event everything you have envisioned. For more information visit the official website http://bit.ly/HUCEventsandCatering

USS IOWA Makes It’s Home In SoCal

The USS Iowa has made it’s home here in Southern California. Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years. Designated the “World’s Greatest Naval Ship” due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technology for more than 50 years.

During her more than 50 years in service, IOWA has welcomed and escorted our nation’s Commander in Chief on many occasions. No other battleship in our nation’s history has been host to more U.S. Presidents than the IOWA. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the first to take this voyage in 1943 for a meeting with Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and Chiang Kai-shek at the Tehran Conference. Next was President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan in 1986 during the celebration of the restoration and centenary of the Statue of Liberty. Lastly President Geaorge H.W. Bush in 1984 for the recommissioning ceremonies in Pascagoula, MS.

After decades of action and several stints in mothballs, the USS Iowa has found a new home in San Pedro, Calif., where she will become a museum. The Iowa, one of America’s last battleships, has a storied past that includes tours in World War II, Korea, and the Cold War.

General Admission tickets for adults ages 18-61 are $18 and $10 for those ages 6-17. Seniors (62 and up) will get in for $15. For more information, visit the Pacific Battleship Center online.

Gas Up on Us!

Let us help you fill your tank when you book our Gas Up Getaway. Stay with us and receive a $50 gas car at the end of your visit. While here, enjoy our complimentary self-parking.
